Merry-go-round animal in polychrome
carved wood made by the most famous and
most well-liked firm at that time: Bayol of Angers
(France). Due to the prime position held by
the horse over all the other animals of the
merry-go-rounds or roundabouts of the last
century, it has become the mythical animal
of our childhood dreams... The image which
is inseparable from the music of fairground
organs. The horses came in groups of three,
sometimes rearing (like this one), sometimes
jumping. The French models had their heads
turned to the right, so it may be deduced that
the merry-go-round turned in a clockwise
direction and we can think too of the very real
horses which had to drag the merry-go-round
around when the showman was not rich
enough to own a steam engine.
