This street organ with handle
made by the well known Gavioli firm plays eight
melodies noted on a pinned wooden cylinder.
Thanks to three sets of wooden pipes, in other
words seventy-nine pipes in a restricted putting
one set in the main frame as well as for the
crafting of the trumpets. This latter set, which
gives the instrument, its powerful sound, along
with the piccolos of the set above (very small
wooden pipes hence high-pitched) defines the
timbre of these instruments dating from the
middle of the 19th century. According to numerous
historical documents, we know that this type of
organ was not designed to accompany songs but to
draw a crowd before an acrobatic performance or a
magic lantern showing or even the reading of a
pamphlet.
